What is a healthcare district?

A healthcare district is a form of local government, governed by a board of directors, similar to a school district or water district. A healthcare district is independent from county or city government and is directly accountable to the public.

Healthcare districts that operate hospitals often provide healthcare in communities significantly impacted by health care provider shortages or where a significant portion of the population is covered by government health insurers Medi-Cal and Medicare, the underinsured and uninsured. Each year, healthcare districts throughout California provide 1 million emergency room visits and 4 million in-patient visits.
